Kyiv Under Fire: Russia Launches Deadliest Airstrike in Nearly a Year

In a chilling escalation of its ongoing war in Ukraine, Russia has unleashed one of the most devastating aerial assaults on Kyiv in recent memory.

The overnight barrage, which struck on June 10, 2025, targeted seven of the capital’s ten districts and left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured, according to Ukrainian officials.

The attack involved a coordinated wave of missiles and Iranian-made Shahed drones, many of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses. Still, the sheer volume of projectiles overwhelmed the system, causing widespread destruction.

Residential buildings, emergency facilities, and even Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained damage.

In the southern city of Odesa, a maternity ward was hit, forcing the evacuation of newborns and mothers. Two men were killed in that strike, and several others were injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks as “one of the largest on Kyiv” and called for immediate international action to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses.

The strikes come amid a broader Russian campaign of intensified bombardments, which Moscow claims are retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory. Over the past week alone, Russia has launched more than 1,400 drones and 70 missiles across Ukraine.

The international response has been swift. U.S. President Donald Trump, visibly frustrated, issued a blunt message to Vladimir Putin: “Vladimir, STOP!” and called for a peace deal to be reached urgently. Meanwhile, European leaders have renewed calls for sanctions and increased military support for Ukraine.

As rescue workers continue to dig through rubble and families mourn their losses, Kyiv’s mayor has declared a day of mourning.

The attack has reignited fears that the war, now in its third year, is entering a more brutal and indiscriminate phase.
