Once at these plants, the tires undergo a process known as mechanical shredding, breaking them down into rubber granules, steel, and textile fibers. 

These materials are then used for a wide range of applications: school playgrounds now feature soft and safe rubberized surfaces, public art installations reflect a commitment to ecological creativity, and designers are giving fashion a green twist with bold, upcycled accessories.

Environmentalists have long warned of the dangers of tire waste. Tires are highly durable and can take hundreds of years to decompose. Their accumulation poses fire hazards and becomes breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes when left exposed to the elements.
